Hotel Description
I remember hopping off the vaporetto at the Palanca stop on Giudecca – you know, that quieter island across the lagoon from the main hustle of Venice – and weaving my way down Calle Montorio, which is this narrow, cobblestoned alley that feels like it’s straight out of an old Italian movie. Honestly, it’s not the glitzy San Marco scene; it’s more laid-back, with locals chatting over espresso at tiny cafes and the occasional whiff of fresh bread from a hidden bakery. Al Battello Apartments popped up at number 660F F, tucked into one of those weathered brick buildings that overlook the water – well, sort of, depending on which unit you get. My first thought was, “This is Venice without the tourist crush,” because even in peak summer, when the canals are jammed with gondolas, Giudecca stays surprisingly serene. The check-in was a breeze; the host met me right at the door with a quick rundown – no fancy lobby, just a friendly local handing over keys and pointing out the nearest grocery on Fondamenta San Giacomo for stocking up on prosciutto and wine. Oh, and fair warning: if you’re lugging heavy bags, those stairs can be a bit of a workout since there’s no elevator – I mean, it’s an old building, what do you expect?
What really won me over, though, was how these apartments feel like your own little slice of Venetian life. Mine had this cozy setup with exposed wooden beams overhead and a kitchenette that actually worked – none of that half-baked stuff you find in some places. I spent mornings brewing coffee while gazing out at the lagoon, listening to the soft lap of waves against the fondamenta and the distant hum of water buses. It’s rated 9.5 for a reason; everything’s spotless, with comfy beds that make you forget the day’s walking (and Venice is all about walking, right?). There’s air conditioning that hums quietly – a godsend in July when the humidity hits – and free Wi-Fi that’s reliable enough for streaming, though I mostly used it to map out routes to spots like the Redentore Church, just a short stroll away. Actually, one evening I wandered over to Harry’s Dolci for gelato – it’s right on the island, and way less crowded than the famous spots in Dorsoduro. The only minor gripe? The bathroom was on the smaller side, with that classic European shower setup where water might splash everywhere if you’re not careful, but hey, it adds to the charm.
If you’re planning a trip to Venice and want to escape the selfie-stick crowds around St. Mark’s Square – which, let’s be real, can be overwhelming after a couple of hours – Al Battello is your spot. It’s a quick vaporetto ride to the action (like 10 minutes to Zattere for those sunset views), but back here, evenings are peaceful, with maybe just the sound of church bells or a neighbor’s accordion drifting in. I stayed in off-season October, when it’s quieter and rates dip, but even in high season, it feels authentic. Four stars? It punches above that, honestly – perfect for couples or small families who want space to unwind. Just book ahead; places like this fill up fast once word gets out.

Lovely Stay! Really big space.
Owners gave us detailed instructions on arrival and tips and tricks. Owners also greeted us and showed us around. Snacks, laundry, everything you need! Clean and Modern. Away from busy Venice for quiet sleep. Restaurants on the street were tasty, did not have to think where to eat for breakfast and dinner.Timur from Russia – 23 October 2024 (9/10)

The property was exceptionally clean and well furnished. The team were very responsive via WhatsApp and I found them to be very accommodating. Thanks Adriano for meeting with us to hand over the keys even after the flight was delayed.
What could be improved: Was perfect for our stay. A few little things to be improved: perhaps consider a weighing scale (to weigh luggage at the end) and a new dustpan and brush (the small one under the sink was a bit warped and didn’t collect the dirt brushed in it.Dagmar from Australia – 25 June 2024 (9/10)
Very spacious apartment, clean and comfortable and everything provided for a wonderful stay. The air conditioning was very much appreciated during a hot and humid week stay.
