Hotel Description

I remember stepping off the train at Santa Lucia station – you know, that bustling hub where everyone arrives in Venice if they’re not splashing out on a water taxi – and thinking, well, this is it, time to navigate those narrow calles without getting lost in the maze. Locanda Ca’ Lucrezia is tucked away on Calle Priuli dei Cavalletti, just a quick five-minute stroll from the station, which is honestly a godsend after lugging suitcases over bridges. No cars in Venice, obviously, so you’re on foot, but it’s flat and straightforward, past those little shops selling cheap masks and gelato that locals roll their eyes at. The building itself is this charming old palazzo – sort of weathered stone with green shutters that creak a bit in the wind – and when I pushed open the door, the smell of fresh espresso hit me right away, mixed with that faint, briny canal scent that permeates everything here. Check-in was a breeze; the owner, this warm Italian guy named Marco (I think? – anyway, he was chatty), handed over the keys with a map scribbled with his favorite nearby spots, like that hidden osteria on Rio Terà San Leonardo where you can get cicchetti without the tourist markup.

What really won me over, though, was how the place feels like a slice of real Venetian life, not some polished chain hotel. It’s only 3 stars, but with an 8.6 rating, you can tell it’s punching above its weight – rooms are cozy, with those high ceilings and exposed beams that make you feel like you’re in a history book (Ca’ Lucrezia nods to some Renaissance figure, I gather, but don’t quote me). My room overlooked a quiet side canal – no gondola traffic, thank goodness, so the only sounds were the occasional lap of water and church bells from Madonna dell’Orto nearby. Beds are firm but comfy, with crisp linens that smell like they’ve been line-dried in the sun, and the bathroom’s got that classic Italian tile, though the shower pressure could be stronger – minor gripe, especially after a day of walking. Breakfast is included and actually decent: fresh croissants, yogurt, and cappuccino served in a sunny courtyard where pigeons coo softly (pro tip: go early in summer to beat the heat, as Venice gets muggy by 10 a.m.). It’s in Cannaregio, which is less frantic than San Marco – you can wander to the Jewish Ghetto for a falafel or hit the vaporetto stop at Ca’ d’Oro for easy rides to the islands. Noise-wise, it’s peaceful at night, except maybe during Carnevale when revelers spill over, but that’s Venice for you.

Honestly, if you’re after an authentic stay without breaking the bank – rooms start around €100 off-season – this is the spot. It’s not flashy, but it’s got heart, and being so close to the station means you can day-trip to Murano or just people-watch from a nearby campo. I left feeling like I’d actually lived a bit of la dolce vita, you know? Just watch your step on those uneven pavements after dark – I nearly twisted an ankle once. Worth it, though.

Very good location near to the bus station so it was easy to drop our bags off, very clean with a nice continental breakfast selection. Located just off the main tourist road and had some mini supermarkets at the end. Very friendly and helpful staff member too.

What could be improved: There was nothing that I didn’t like! It’s a lovely little hotel.

For us the location was the thing we appreciated most. The B&B is literally around the corner from the train station and vaparetto stops. It is also very easy to walk to the bus station.
We liked the area of Cannaregio where the B&B is located.
Our room was clean, warm and comfortable. It’s not a big room.
The bathroom is adequate. The shower cubicle may be a bit small for bigger/taller people.
We appreciated having a kettle and a safe in the room.
    There is good sound proofing.
Breakfast was excellent from our point of view. There was enough selection and quantity for us. Quality of the breakfast was also good.
We would like to highlight how good the staff were. Valeria was a warm and welcoming host.

What could be improved: I’m not sure if it’s possible due to the size of the room and the electrical points availability but a small fridge would be a great facility in our view.
