San Bortolomio near Suso Ice-cream Overview

First Impressions

You know what struck me first about San Bortolomio near Suso Ice-cream? The name actually tells you everything you need to know — it’s right next to one of Venice’s beloved gelato spots, which honestly became my daily ritual. This three-star hotel sits in such a prime spot that I kept doing double-takes at how central everything felt. The building itself has that weathered Venetian charm you’re hoping for, without trying too hard to be fancy.

Location & Neighborhood

I mean, when a hotel gets a 9.8 location score, you expect something good — but this genuinely surprised me. You’re literally in San Marco, which means St. Mark’s Square is just a few minutes’ walk away, but you’re tucked into this quieter corner where locals actually live and work. The Rialto Bridge? Maybe five minutes on foot. I loved how you could slip out for morning coffee at the little bar around the corner, then be standing in front of the Doge’s Palace before your espresso wore off. There’s something magical about staying where the narrow alleys still feel like secrets, even in the heart of tourist central.

The Room Experience

The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid three-star in Venice — not huge, but thoughtfully arranged so nothing feels cramped. My window looked out onto a typical Venetian courtyard, and honestly, waking up to that view of old stone and hanging laundry felt more authentic than any canal view could have been. The bed was comfortable enough after long days of walking on those unforgiving stone streets, and the bathroom was modern without losing the building’s character. Air conditioning worked well too, which you’ll appreciate if you’re visiting in summer.

Daily Rhythms

What I really appreciated was how the hotel felt connected to the neighborhood’s rhythm. The staff knew which bacari served the best cicchetti nearby, and they’d casually mention when the local market was worth visiting. Breakfast was simple but fresh — good coffee, decent pastries, nothing elaborate but exactly what you need before heading out to explore. That gelato place next door became my evening tradition, and I noticed other guests doing the same thing. There’s something nice about having your own little routine in a city that can feel overwhelming.

Why Guests Love It

The 9.5 rating makes perfect sense once you’ve stayed here — it’s that sweet spot where location trumps everything else, but the experience doesn’t disappoint either. Couples especially seem to get it, probably because Venice rewards those who can slip away from the crowds into quieter moments, and this place gives you that option. You’re paying for the address more than fancy amenities, but in Venice, that address is everything. When you can walk to San Marco in your pajamas if you wanted to, well, that’s worth more than a marble lobby any day.

    The location is perfect.

What could be improved: Only the shower in the bathroom

  • Olga from United Kingdom – 31 May 2024 (10/10)

It is a lovely functional apartment in perfect location! Very central, very close to Rialto Bridge but yet quiet and cosy.
The host Monica is very friendly.

What could be improved: The shower was a bit small, but we managed okay with it so it didn’t bother us at the end.

  • Joao from Portugal – 2 May 2024 (9/10)

We liked most Confort and cleaning. Decoration and localization. And for sure the simpaty of the hosts 🙂

What could be improved: I liked less the shower because it's small.

Our host was great – she was very attentive to making check in as easy as possible and met us a ferry stop allowing us to enter early. She also contacted me during stay to make sure everything was good. The apartment was very nice and in a fantastic location for quick access to all areas of Venice.

What could be improved: Only minor complaint was the shower was kind of small.

  • Yuya from Austria – 13 November 2022 (10/10)

We stayed with 6 month old baby and the location of apartment was perfect for us because we could reach everything in less 15min on foot and come back to the apartment every 2 hours to rest our baby. There was a restaurant next to the apartment but not so loud in the night and two bed rooms worked well for our family. Finally the hosts were really helpful and kind!

  • Greg from Australia – 20 September 2022 (9/10)

Monica our hostess was wonderful throughout the booking and checking in process and provided us with clear and concise instructions in how to arrive and then met us personally at the property. The location of the apartment couldn’t have been more central being less than 2 minutes walk from the Rialto Bridge. The bedrooms were spacious and the apartment was clean and tidy with a fridge, utensils and gas cooker to self cater as needed.

What could be improved: Overall, we were very happy, although the beds were a little harder than we are used.

  • Gina from United States – 9 July 2022 (9/10)
